Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste

Saint-Jean-de-Losne

Description

This church is covered in 16th-century glazed tiles, and was built to replace a more ancient church that was burned down and significantly damaged during the Hundred Years’ War, in 1362.

Rue de la Liberté, you can admire a large gate with oak sculpture of Saint-John-the-Baptist. Go around the south side of the transcept and you’ll find an entrance, push open the door to reveal the pulpit thats dates from 1604 (Hugues Le Rupt) in red marble from Sampans, and a set of statues that date from the 15th to the 18th centuries. In the chancel, there are stalls from 1757 and the canopy of the high altar dates from 1784. In the transcept, there’s a riverboat from 1826. The construction also houses an organ from 1768 by organ maker Bénigne Boillot. One of the rare French musical instruments from the 18th century that is still close to its original condition (classified Historic Monument).

Take advantage of our Greeter’s expert knowledge to find out more about the organ.
